The Story Behind The Motown

THE MOTOWN

Motown is a term that has two meanings: it is a nickname for Detroit, Michigan, and it is also the name of a legendary record label founded by Berry Gordy Jr. in Detroit in 1959. The term "Motown" is derived from the city's nickname, "Motor City," which referred to its history as a center of the automobile industry.

Rasa Sunglasses is committed to paying homage to the cultural derivation of our styles. The wood "buffs" style temples on THE MOTOWN take inspiration directly from the popular Detroit glasses of yore, and such a frame wouldn't be complete without the iconic, rimless lenses.

The Motown record label was home to many legendary artists, including Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Temptations, and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, among others. These artists, along with others on the label, created a unique sound that combined elements of gospel, R&B, and pop, and became one of the most influential musical movements of the 20th century.

The Sound of Motown

The Motown sound was characterized by a focus on tight harmonies, upbeat tempos, and upbeat lyrics, as well as a heavy emphasis on the rhythm section and horns. This sound was popular with audiences of all ages and races and became known as the "Sound of Young America." Many of the artists on the Motown label were African American, and the label played an important role in promoting black artists and helping to break down racial barriers in the music industry. In fact, Motown was one of the first record labels to feature black artists prominently on its rosters, and many of the artists on the label went on to achieve great commercial and critical success.

Motown and Black History Month

Motown holds a special place in African American history and culture, and it is often celebrated as part of Black History Month. This annual observance, which takes place in the United States during the month of February, is dedicated to celebrating the contributions and accomplishments of African Americans throughout history.

Motown and its artists are often recognized for their impact on popular music, as well as their role in promoting racial equality and breaking down barriers in the music industry. The label's music and its artists continue to inspire and entertain people of all ages and races, and their contributions to the cultural landscape are remembered and celebrated each year as part of Black History Month.

In conclusion, Motown is much more than just a record label or a sound; it is a significant part of American history and culture, and its influence can still be felt today. The music and artists of Motown will always hold a special place in the hearts of fans and music lovers, and their legacy will continue to be celebrated and remembered for generations to come. The legend serves as a fitting namesake for our glasses collection, which seeks to share this iconic symbol of Detroit with the entire world.
